It is considered to be the largest leisure and entertainment complex in Europe.
The project was first announced in the US and it was more formally launched to the public and press in December 2007 in Zaragoza. Project Theme The theme for the project is to capture time through all the major civilisations and it has been described as 'A Giant Time Capsule'. There will be 16 different historical periods that are reflected in the resort and a giant sun dial at the centre. The civilizations are laid out in a large circle around the resort. Granscala is designed to be the European centre for fun and culture with 5 theme parks, 32 international hotels and casinos, sports arena, golf courses, concert areas, museums and kids parks. In addition there will be a large amount of commercial space, approximately 200 restaurants, bars, cinemas and camping. The theme parks will take up a quarter of the space, casinos 14%, 20% to hotels and restaurants and 25% to infrastructure. Transport The resort will be accessed by plane, train and road and on the resort itself more than 100km of roadway and tramways are planned. The transport on the resort will be electric or hydrogen powered. Project Phasing The project will be built in three phases, separated by a period of about 2 years. The beginning of construction is planned for the end of 2008 with the first phase opening in 2010/2011. The first phase will include 3 theme parks and up to 14 casinos. Investment and Structure Granscala will consist of a consortium of 12 international leisure companies, all leaders in their fields.
